Breast Augmentation / Implants Breast augmentation is an elective cosmetic procedure that offers women the ability to have larger, rounder and fuller naturally appearing breasts with or without a lift. Breast augmentation creates a more feminine curvaceous shape by making the breasts proportionate in size with the hips and waist. Many women choose this procedure after childbearing and after breast development is complete to feel better about their appearance. The procedure is always individualized with regard to choice of incision, type of implants, and whether or not to include a lift. A breast lift can raise and reshape sagging breasts, provide a fuller more balanced shape, as well as reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. Incisions can be Inframammary (breast fold), periareolar (bottom of the areola), Transaxillary (armpit) or TUBA (belly button) with endoscopic (surgical telescope) control. Implant choices include round, smooth, textured, anatomical, and adjustable. Implants can be placed between the chest muscle and breast tissue (subglandular), or below the chest muscle (submuscular). The surgeon makes an incision in the breast to create a "pocket," or space for the breast implant. The breast implant is then placed in the pocket and positioned. The incision is closed with stitches (sutures), and possibly tape. The breast implant is typically inserted empty and then filled with saline to permit the smallest possible incision. The surgery takes 2-4 hours and is most often performed under general anesthesia where the patient is in a deep sleep and free of pain. Local anesthesia may be an option. Patients should consult their surgeon for a complete explanation of the procedure and its associated risks and complications.
